“Before schools closed in Ohio, even children were experiencing racism, said Tessa Xuan, chair of Ohio Progressive Asian Women’s Leadership (OPAWL), a grassroots organization representing Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. And she worries it will only get worse as fears mount.
Two weeks ago, OPAWL sent a letter, signed by hundreds of organizations and individuals across the state, urging public officials to denounce racism against Asian Americans.
“Our leaders need to actively combat racism against AAPI children and adults, many of whom are on the front line of the pandemic working in our hospitals, restaurants, and grocery stores,” the letter said.
Some officials have supported their efforts, but there has yet to be a statewide push to shut down racist rhetoric, she said.”
